UFO TV Show DVD Review

UFO (38)

What a fantastic show! How come I’ve never heard of this science-fiction television show before? Is it because it’s British? I first learned of UFO a couple months back at Retrospace, and then a few days later saw it mentioned at Spy Vibe, so I put it at the top of my Netflixicon queue. The style by Sylvia Anderson is very cool, Nehru collars, mini-skirts, pantsuits, bright colors, space-age cars, and high-modern buildings. The music by Barry Grayis simply fantastic. Some of the best music for a TV show ever.

UFO Screengrab

The cinematography is outstanding. The characters are individual and believable. Be aware however, many of the UFO episodes end on a down note or in a contemplative mood. Not like Star Trek where Capitan Kirk saves the day and the Enterprise moves on victoriously. Many of UFO shows end with someone feeling the repercussions of decisions made and the pressures of the secrecy their organization is sworn to. An almost melancholy mood permeates. There is some disagreements within the team as to how situations are handled which keeps tensions high, as if marauding aliens wasn’t enough. But these are all can-do people of high caliber, and there is bound to be some strong opinions.

UFO (9)

The organization is S.H.A.D.O. Supreme Headquarters Alien Defence Organization. Humanoid aliens are harvesting human organs. SHADO takes every opportunity to blast aliens out of the sky. Headquarters is under a film studio, they also have a submarine that launches a jet plane, some earth to moon rockets, a moon base with space fighters, and many other fancy toys. In fact, they look like toys. That’s the one drawback to this show, the special effects aren’t even up to Star Trek quality.

UFO (43)

The year is 1980, as they flash almost subliminally on the screen several times during the opening credits. My kids thought that was hilarious. 1980 is the future and they think we’ll have all these rocket ships and a moon base. But, you have to remember that in 1970 when the show was filmed, man had just landed on the moon and they probably did think that a moon base with back and forth traffic was entirely possible in a decade.

UFO made me appreciate the out-dated university building where I work. But we do have these cool tables and chairs.

Gerry Anderson’s UFO is one very cool show that everyone reading this blog should check out. Also check out my 56 screencaps. There is so much coolness, I could have grabbed 100s more.

  2. IQXS, Thanks for the comment. That light fixture is at the top of a 3-story stairwell and hasn’t had a bulb changed in 30 years! It looks nice, but architects need to think some things through.

Great review and I love the pictures of your university and the nice screen captures. You really got it going on here!

What’s interesting is that my post at Retrospace was about how I wanted an office like SHADO… and you kind of do! Lucky dawg.

  4. Maybe Gil, but my office doesn’t turn into an elevator!
