“Youthquake in the Sixties!” Sounds of the Now Generation. Word Records WST-8413-LP, 1968.

This is actually the sounds that parents wished was the sound of the “Now” Generation. I’m not kidding when I say that most of these songs sound like they are from a 1940s-1950s musical. Full orchestration and singers. What clued me in to the possibility that this was not “Now” was the clarinet on the cover. On one song I thought I heard a guitar. Two numbers sound like Louis Armstrong style jazz (nothing wrong with that). One of those is by Phil Driscoll, who played trumpet for Joe Cocker and sounds like Cocker quite a bit when he sings, but he isn’t singing on this album. The very last song could almost be in the style of the Kingston Trio. That’s about as hip as this album from Campus Life gets. And the liner notes talk about how youth “…play, sing, write, work, listen and march with enthusiasm and vigor. And we demand that our music be the same!” Perhaps, but this album ain’t it. However, I do like the front and back covers.

I wish I could post a song from it. If someone wants to donate money toward that cause (a USB turntable or such), I promise to use it to get more sounds on my posts.

Well loved albums of my childhood. So how many of you knew that Ronco did not only cheap kitchen gadgets, but also record albums?

K-tel released another album called Goofy Greats in 1982 with many different songs. That’s the one that’s in the Amazon MP3 ad below, as well as some other albums called by that name in the top Amazon ad. Remember (like you already knew), you can’t copyright a title, so anyone can use it.

This is a LONG post, I should have done each album separate.

So, I missed all the hubaloo about the big Woodstock 40th anniversary. Here are a couple albums that fit in that vibe. 20 Monster Hits and then the sequel, 10 More Monster Hits. When I first saw the 20 Monster Hits I thought this was a rare album, but I’ve seen it everywhere since. One of the more interesting songs is “Season of the Witch” by Steve(n) Stills and Al Kooper instead of the usual Donavon.

KLEO Double Gold The Big 1480 (yes folks, that’s AM radio), Custom Fidelity Company Inc., a part of Liberty/ UA (United Artists). CFS 2315-2. I’d say this is late 1960s. The songs range from 1961 to 1969. Unfortunately, this is not my album.

The photo is of downtown Wichita, Kansas. The big round building on the right is Century II where they have conventions and concerts. Once in high school, we took buses there for something, a three-hour trip, and that night Foreigner was going to be in concert. This was right after the release of 4. I almost skipped the bus to stay for the concert. My grandparents live in Wichita and I figured they might find a way to get me home. I would only miss a day of school. Alas, I didn’t do it.

The albums start off strong with The Shocking Blue, but there’s some fairly tepid songs. A few high spots include Billy Stewart, The Music Explosion, The Turtles, The Intruders, Jay and the Americans, Mel Carter, Canned Heat, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and Little Anthony and the Imperials.

Johnny Cash and Friends, Columbia Special Products C 10777 stereo, 1972. Includes Lynn Anderson, June Carter, George Jones, Jody Miller, Ray Price, Marty Robbins, and Tammy Wynette. An Associated Drug Stores Exclusive Promotion. Looks like this one was purchased at Skaggs for $1.50. Pretty good deal I’d say. These are not duets, but a lot of different singers on one album.

Then we have The Orange Blossom Special Mono, Columbia CL-2309, 1965. The Orange Blossom Special was a train and the song was written by Ervin T. Rouse as a fiddle song. It’s played all the time at bluegrass festivals. Johnny Cash mixed it up a bit by using a harmonica instead of a fiddle. One of Rouse’s friends claims Cash ruined the song. There is a PBS documentary on the song but I can’t find any links to it. Also on this album is the Bob Dylan song “It Ain’t Me Babe” and the traditional “Long Black Veil.”

Ring of Fire: The Best of Johnny Cash. Columbia CS 8853, 1963. The rings on the cover are much more pronounced in the photo than in real life.

History of Country Music Volume 1. UMI Inc and Together of Nashville Inc. Interesting folk art work by Bill Hall. I’m familiar with UMI as producers of microfilm like you find in university libraries. They call 1922 the birth year of Country Music. I donn’t know about that, but OK. This album has Jimmy Rogers, Ernest Tubb, Gene Autry, The Carter Family, Pee Wee King, Sons of the Pioneers, Homer and Jethro, Elton Britt, Vaughn Moore, Hank Snow, Chet Atkins, Del Wood, Slim Whitman, Davis Sisters, Stuart Hamblen, Roy Acuff, Cowboy Copas, Moon Mullican Hank Williams Sr. (4 songs!), Tennessee Ernie Ford (2 songs), Patti Page, The Carlisles, Hank Thompson, Tex Ritter, Johnny Cash, and George Jones. Similar Posts:

A Very Special Christmas, Special Olympics Productions, SP-3911. 1987.

This was the first album in a series of these produced for good causes. This version has The Pointer Sisters, Eurythmics, Whitney Houston, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, The Pretenders, John Cougar Mellencamp, Sting, Run-DMC (with a great song, Christmas in Hollis), U2 (of course, it’s a socially conscious album), Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band, Bryan Adams, Bon Jovi, Alison Moyet, and Stevie Nicks (singing Silent Night without a baby Jesus. Very odd if you ask me. And the most Christian band on the LP, U2, isn’t even doing a Christian song.).

Wow, I haven’t listened to this in 20 years, I should give it a shot again. There are a few here I will be skipping over.
