Stormtroopers blasting away. The front cover a Star Wars spiral-bound notebook. Wow, the scan really shows this worse than it looks in person. And darker. Hard to believe I’ve been lugging this thing around since 1977. I should add that this is a rare cover, it was hard to find in the stores, so that’s probably why I kept it. It was hanging on my wall as a kid, so it’s got a pin hole at the top. I should just let my kids have it, but then it would be gone forever. Except, not really, as it will float around in digital form for quite a few years now.

This Remco “Beachcomber” Dune Buggy Wheelies Pick-Up motorized with corded remote control was at my grandparents house for me to play with whenever I visited. A few years ago Grandma gave it to me. I’m glad she did because she has a bad habit of throwing stuff out. I never did like the “flower power” aspect to this toy, but I sure loved playing with it. It turns, goes forward and backward, sports a surf board, has authentic “mod” dune buggy styling, and best of all, it does wheelies. The box says 1971, but the car says 1970.

Though let’s begin with “desperate intrigue, romance, and violence in the Caribbean.”

Danger at Bravo Key by Ronald Johnston. P3007, Signet 1967. “He was a world-weary newspaper man…” What a cliche. Sometimes that’s the best way to begin, but good grief.

Gigi and Julie de Carneilhan by Collette. Signet S1525 1958. A tie in with the movie Gigi, which I didn’t care for.

This one is quite interesting. How to Profit from the Coming Rapture: Getting Ahead When You’re Left Behind by Steve and Evie Levy as told to Ellis Weiner and Barbara Davilman. Little, Brown and Company, 2008. “The investment guide the Antichrist doesn’t want you to read.” If you really believe there’s a coming rapture where all the Christians are taken to Heaven, then wouldn’t you be one of the believers who will be taken? If you belive there will be a rapture, but don’t plan to go in order to get rich here on Earth, “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36) Frankly, I’m puzzled at the whole thing. “As told to”? Isn’t that usually used for biography or autobiography? How would you like to be named Evie Levy? And shouldn’t it be Stevie and Evie levy? Ok, now I’ve looked it up (this here internet thing is pretty cool) and it seems it’s a satire.

Back to the real world: The History of Little Orphan Annie by Bruce Smith. Ballantine 1982. A tie-in with the movie Annie. Which was quite good actually. Carol Burnett was very good.

This just sucks, why is the background clear and the main object blurry? And why didn’t it show up better in the little preview window so I’d know to take the picture again? Anyway, this little Remco wind-up walking toy from the Banana Splits TV show is in my Dad’s store.

What kind of camera focuses on the background, not the big thing in the middle? Stupid thing. First we have a Bonneville type racer (or could be a dragster) running a 4-carb engine that is actually an electric motor. The two-door Model A sedan I’m pretty sure was mine when I was a kid, yet here my dad has it in his store. I’m sure he’d let me have it back, but what am I going to do with it? Stick it in a box? Anyway, it says TONKA and Flower Power on the stickers. Plastic Toy Cars of the 1950s & 1960s: The Collector’s Guide O’Brien’s Collecting Toy Cars & Trucks 4th Edition (Paperback)

One of the many things in Dad’s showcases. Donald Duck, 100 Sunshine Straws. This 15 cent box has Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse, and Pluto on it. I guess the dog Pluto is supposed to be using a straw also? “Straws are the sanitary, convenient way to serve milk, iced drinks, or bottled beverages.” I’m guessing this is Disneyana from the 1950s by the fonts.

Pickwick Children’s Records. “Pinocchio” with “Aladdin and his Magic Lamp” Mr. Pickwick MP-10, and “Favorite Songs from Peter Pan” MP-6. Both have the same back. My guess for the date is early 1970s, but I could be off.
