Sounds of the ‘Now’ Generation!
“Youthquake in the Sixties!” Sounds of the Now Generation. Word Records WST-8413-LP, 1968.
This is actually the sounds that parents wished was the sound of the “Now” Generation. I’m not kidding when I say that most of these songs sound like they are from a 1940s-1950s musical. Full orchestration and singers. What clued me in to the possibility that this was not “Now” was the clarinet on the cover. On one song I thought I heard a guitar. Two numbers sound like Louis Armstrong style jazz (nothing wrong with that). One of those is by Phil Driscoll, who played trumpet for Joe Cocker and sounds like Cocker quite a bit when he sings, but he isn’t singing on this album. The very last song could almost be in the style of the Kingston Trio. That’s about as hip as this album from Campus Life gets. And the liner notes talk about how youth “…play, sing, write, work, listen and march with enthusiasm and vigor. And we demand that our music be the same!” Perhaps, but this album ain’t it. However, I do like the front and back covers.
I wish I could post a song from it. If someone wants to donate money toward that cause (a USB turntable or such), I promise to use it to get more sounds on my posts.

Yeah that clarinet really threw me too…
I played the clarinet briefly in grade school.. haven’t played one since around ‘80.
A friend of mine played the accordion. I still rag him about it.
