Nelson Riddle – The Joy of Living

How many of you are aware of how much Nelson Riddle did? He did the music to the 1966 Batman Movie and TV show. Also the Paint Your Wagon soundtrack, which I’ve posted. He worked with Frank Sinatra for years (and Frank was such a perfectionist you know Riddle was good). Riddle also worked with Ella Fitzgerald, Tommy Dorsey, Nat King Cole, Les Baxter, Julie Andrews, Linda Ronstadt, and more. And I really dig the brightly colored inner sleeves expounding the glories of stereo.

I remember commercials for the Nelson Riddle Orchestra when I was a kid in the late 70′s and early 80′s. I had no idea he worked with Sinatra though. That’s pretty major. I have a few Sinatra CD’s I fire up when I get in the “swinging” mood.
I remember a few years ago listening to an interview with Glen Campbell, and he is a lot like Nelson Riddle in that he has played with everyone, including Sinatra and was a member of the Beach Boys. I think most people don’t realize how collaborative a lot of these guys from the 50′s and 60′s were, and how versatile. That’s what differentiates guys like Campbell, Riddle, Willie Nelson, etc, from most of today’s artists. How many of today’s artists could go from Jazz, to Swing, to Big Band, to County and rock? The only one I can think of is maybe someone like Jack White, who produced an album for Loretta Lynn, but that’s still not the same.
