Elvis Presley – A Remembrance
Elvis Presley died on Aug 16, 1977. I remember the day vividly. I was 11 years old, looking for a snack in the kitchen, where the radio was always on, when the DJ said Elvis had died. I just sat down and lost my appetite. I remember watching “Aloha from Hawaii” when it aired and then again when it was re-shown. I’ve got the CD now and it’s really fantastic. The 1968 “Comback” Special is just that, special. He was a cultural force, no matter what you think of him.
Listen to a whole show about him and his influence on American Routes. A show all music lovers should listen to anyway.
Some of the impact Elvis had can be seen in these examples: Perry White on the TV show Lois and Clark called him “The King” and based decisions on what The King would do (thus combining Superman and Elvis), Kansas City has an “Elvis Parade,” Black rock group Living Color has a song “Elvis is Dead” with Little Richard rapping about Elvis, and of course, the Flying Elvi, immortalized with the Nicholas Cage movie Honeymoon in Vegas (Elvi being the plural form of Elvis). I don’t have time to do a decent write up, but wanted to do a little something. Do any of you remember where you were when Elvis died?

I remember finding some old records of my mom’s. Among them were old Elvis 45′s like the ones above. What I thought was great was as a kid she wrote things like “Elvis is dreamy” on them. I didn’t think people really talked like that back then.

Great post. I wasn’t quite 7 when Elvis died. I’ll be honest that I don’t remember. I do remember when John Lennon died. I raise a toast to the King.
The quote of John Lennon: “Before Elvis, there was nothing.” says it all about that great artist of all times. Here I’ve tried to collect all notable tributes paid to Elvis Presley by peers:
